Whether you have children returning to school, or you’re simply a frequent driver, fall is a busy time. The last thing anyone needs to handle is car troubles, which is why it’s important to stay on top of vehicle maintenance and repairs, and most importantly, preparation for unexpected problems or emergencies. AAA Southern Pennsylvania compiled the following tips to ensure you and your loved ones drive with confidence this fall:

Check and maintain tires.
Some quick and easy TLC can keep your tires reliable. Check your vehicle’s tire pressure monthly while the tires are cold and reference the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure, which is typically listed on the driver’s door or in the glove box. Don’t forget to double-check the spare tire is in your car, too.

Familiarize yourself with the vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
Everyone has a busy schedule, but it’s important that car maintenance remains a priority. Drivers should review the owner’s manual to review recommended maintenance and service schedules for oil changes, tire rotations, air filters, brake tune-ups, and batteries in the event maintenance is required.

Locate your nearest car repair facility.
Not all maintenance or car issues can wait. If an issue requires immediate attention, drivers should know where the nearest auto repair shop is. This is especially important for families with children away at college.

Be prepared for emergencies.
No matter how prepared you are, emergencies still happen. Always keep your AAA Member Card on hand, and have an emergency kit packed in your vehicle with the following items:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Jumper cables
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • First-aid kit
  • Basic tools
  • Blanket
  • Water and snacks
